My Makeshift Comfy Sofa!

Ahhhhhh, it feels good to be back home! Got back yesterday but it took me a good 24 hours to 'find' my balance again. Sob7an Allah how immediately one feels better at home. Not that anything has changed, the dayareeeiaaa is still there, and the shivers too, but somehow I feel better. I need to rest, I know, but I feel good and less anxious and ready to conquer this ugly thing again.
I have also been eating a bit too. In fact, ouyouni ma tshoof el chicken soup, or el pasta w laban for that matter! (I have chicken soup coming out of my ears now, and if I smell boiling pasta, my stomach turns!) But today I had spaghetti with tomato sauce, yay! It turns out that dairy products are not good for diorayaaaeeiiaa! So, remember all the riz w laban, or batata w laban or labneh w toast u used to eat for an upset stomach? LOSE the laban and labneh!!! I can't even have cheese, or milk! So what do I have for breakfast??? Dilemma. I can't even have eggs cuz they make my stomach feel funny. And toast with honey or even pancakes are too dry for my dry mouth! Suggestions for something good for breakfast, not dairy and not dry??? Help!!!

I thought I'd share the above picture with you. Wiss took it of me this afternoon and I thought the colours were amazing (forget the content, I look like 'ssssick'!) As you can see, my eyebrows are really trying to bud out but with great difficulty. This is the longest I've ever been without hair and this cold weather isn't really helping here! That's the makeshift sofa, the one that'll have to do till we get to the 'original' in Beirut. This one's going with me though. I proudly bought it from Ikea. It doubles up as a king-sized bed, quite comfy indeed for the likes of its own. And that's the famous hot-water bottle, the secret to man's happiness (or mine, at least!)

Ok now, since I need to rest, and I am not really allowed to leave the house much yet, any suggestions as to how to keep busy, of course other than TV, books, mags, puzzles, cooking, etc... I know i am asking for the moon here, but perhaps someone might come up with a winner!
Awaiting your suggestions (bear in my mind, I don't like to read much, I am usually impatient and I get bored easily! There, haven't I made this easier on you?!! hehe!!! Good luck!)
Mwah,
H

halloul.. I love your blog thank you for taking the time to keep us all close to you :-) Ok so food is not my speciality and my idea of a good breakfast is a cup of coffee.. So no help there so here are my top 10 lists of things to do when you have nothing to do...
1. call someone (I love Skype, just got a new computer it is almost like sitting across from the person! makes time fly. Make appointments with all of us and then we can entertain you for an hour/ half an hour.. super fun.. I spend all day in conference calls / meeting anyway it might be more fun to have conference calls with people one likes :-)
2. Listen to a whole CD and sing along (some of the classics Les Mis, Phantom, Lion King, Meet me on a Sunday, anything ABBA, old disco songs, 80s music this takes a couple of hours)
3. Handiwork (draw, paint, make bead bracelets, knit while watching tv makes it less boring)
4. learn the art of folding napkins (I always wanted to do that dont ask why :-) they even have these instructions online and you can do alonghttp://www.customlinenservice.com/napkins.htm
5. play sudoku http://www.websudoku.com/ (does this count as a puzzle? its fun anyways)
6. read comics (especially when going to the toilet I highly recommend Archie and Friends, Lucky Luke, Astrix & Obilex great stuff) would this count as reading? I suppose not cause they have pretty pictures :-)
7. surf www.youtube.com (I love the comedy section and the most viewed are always fun - doing this one lazy afternoon I discovered this group called Axis of Evil they do comedy about the middle east. It is hilarious, apparently also a big hit now in Jordan/ Lebanon, also all the Eddie Murphy and other comedian stand up comedy skits are on very funny stuff)
8. sign up to Facebook and "stalk your friends" (this is a time consuming hobby and you have lots of friends you can read their walls, view their pictures, see their favorite books, quotes, and keep up with their moods - I love stalking old lost friends the most, for the others see point 1 :-) You can even play some of the game, those are great fun (list all the places you traveled, take a quiz to test your knowledge on a variety of music and tv shows great fun and you can even challenge and beat your friends :-)
9. Write your favorite tips (travel, restaurants, hotels, etc) in all various cities. Stefan does this, he is the number 2 in entries in Germany and says it is fun as it is relaxing and brings back great memories:-) I tried to find an English website but was not successful (I am sure there is one but google failed me today..)
10. Make lists (I learned today that making a top 10 list can be super fun and takes a long time.. I started 2 hours ago, meanwhile I got lost playing a couple of games of Sudoku, listening to ABBA in the background, going on youtube :-)

love you and hope that you enjoy the list

The best thing of course would be some manoushi, don't you think? Well it sounds good to me anyhow. Oatmeal would be good and easy too. It is possible to eat it without milk, just sugar and maybe a little cinnamon. My grandmother used to always make us barley broth for diariah, diarriah, diareeaa. Well, you know.

God bless you and keep you safe and restore your health dear Hala.

good morning and welcome back home and okbal the original sofa inshalah!!
breakfast --- now hmmm --- I agree with rabab, hommus and foul would have been my first two choices -- other options would be fruit smoothies -- do yummy ones with berries - you can get them ready made from marks!
how about alayat bandoora --- just cook the tomatoes slowly and dip in soft toast bread to eat it with.
my old time favourite is tomatoes on toast

grill the red tomatoes till they are soft then peel.
toast the bread and then put on some butter -- spread the tomatoes over the toast and sprinke with salt --

hope the above helps a bit!! will get you some more recipies from a nutritionist friend I know.

God bless you -- enjoy you makeshift sofa and have a healthy day inshalah!

been on my laptop just long enough to check up on you - and loved seeing your beautiful face first thing in the morning!

ok, now for the first part of the post:
I know everyone means well, but there's one tiny detail that's being overlooked in this deluge of breakfast suggestions: you need to slow down the runny plumbing, NOT make it worse.
So here is what I know for a fact:

... Dairy products (mostly cheese, milk and cream - yogurt and labne less so) are no good for that.
... Fat is no good either.
.... Neither is sugar, in the form of juice or "wet" fruits.
... Anything that you would normally eat to eat fiber to your diet, like green veggies, whole grains and cereals (like hommos and foul, sorry Rabab) are out.
.... Acidic foods like tomatoes are out too.

So, Rima you party-pooper, what is left?

Well, bananas are good.
Melba toast.
Plain pasta and rice (sorry, but it's true).
Weak tea, but with not too much sugar.
The best weapon really is potatoes: there is some magic ingredient in those tubers that somehow calms the intestines, and slows down the spasms. Baked potatoes (or jacket potatoes on your side of the pond), with a tiny pat of butter (go ahead, indulge a little bit - a small pat is ok). Or steamed new potatoes - they are usually so sweet and creamy that they often don't need much more than a bit of salt.

As for breakfast: I think BigBro and Bobbie's suggestions are the most reasonable. A little cooked oatmeal or barley, or more familiar to us, pearled wheat (amh ma'shour) is filling and satisfying.

Here's how to cook "amhiyeh":
rinse 1/2 cup pearled wheat (or barley, it's good too) well.
Place in pot, cover with about 2 cups water, bring to a boil, then simmer down. When the grains are soft, add sugar (maalesh, don't make it too sweet this time). I like brown sugar myself. You can also add a dash of vanilla or rosewater - I don't and don't miss it. Add a bit of water if needed and cook some more. Don't forget that it thickens a bit as it cools downs.
Put some of those sliced bananas, maybe a couple of raisins to add some taste, cinnamon if you like it. It warms you up and sticks to your ribs - and hopefully won't make you run for the bathroom.

Now I have to go do some homework about how to entertain yourself! I would pick sleeping a lot myself, but that's sleep-deprived me :-)

Will call later today after I get out of my jammies
love

Welcome home Hala!! .... "home" mmm let's say your home in Europe!!

How are you doing today? I hope you feel better and less bored than the past days, anyhow, waiting for brighter days in all its meanings, I suggest you a funny diversion: shopping on line!! Do you think can you like it?? Why not??? There are many advantages i.e. shops always opened.... no problems to find a car parking... no matter for the weather outside... all shops you are looking for with a click... a wide availability of models, size and coulors with pictures and then, once bought, if it doesn't fit or don't like just send it back after having tried it comfortably at your home... did I convince you?? If so and if you like Italian fashion and designers visit www.yoox.com nice, complete and reliable. Enjoy it!!

A further suggestion, this time for your breakfast... having not understood what bigbro and bobbie suggested you, my suggestion is lemon tea with rise cake... it should solve your slight problem...

Good luck

Halouli,
I found this online for you .. hope it helps.
Suggestions for What to Eat and Drink While You Have Diarrhea:
Liquids:
Force yourself to drink fluids (drink even when you don't feel thirsty) to replace body water lost by diarrhea. Water should be only part of the 8 to 10 glasses of fluids you drink a day; it does not replace lost minerals.
Gatorade®* is a good source of fluids and it helps to replace lost salt and potassium.
Clear soup or broth can help to replace lost salt.
Sodas are also good for replacing salt, but let them stand until fizz has decreased to help prevent more gas or bloating.AVOID milk and dairy products, they can make diarrhea worse.
AVOID alcohol and coffee - even decaffeinated coffee.
Foods: Eat frequent small meals. A good choice of foods for diarrhea follows:
B-bananas—to help replace lost nutrients
R-rice—easy to digest and is a binding starch
A-apple sauce—to provide sugars for energy and soluble (water-holding) fiber
T-toast—easy to tolerate and is a binding starc.
When these foods are being well tolerated, then you can start adding other foods. Choose bland low-fiber foods, such as
White-chicken meat without the skin
Scrambled eggs
Crackers, white bread, and pasta noodles without sauce
Canned or cooked fruits without skins
Some foods can make diarrhea and cramping worse and should be avoided. These include
Fatty, fried, greasy, or spicy foods that can cause more problems and discomfort
High-fiber foods that can be troublesome; bran and some cereals, raw fruits and vegetables
Dried fruits, beans, popcorn, and nuts
Chocolate

Haloul,
I think for breakfast you can do a lot with applesauce and there are so many recipes online.
Good luck habibti. Love you. Dina.

Applesauce Oat Crunch:

1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups applesauce
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350. Grease an 8x8 baking dish and set aside.
Combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and applesauce. Spread in the prepared dish, and sprinkle with lemon juice.
Stir together oats, sugar and butter, and spread over applesauce mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

hi hala,
Thanks your beautiful words habibti I didn’t know my words would give such help in soothing you but maybe because I felt you so much… Welcome back hala… nice to see you happy on your lovely comforting couch. For a breakfast or a snack, I thought of a very simple thing: ka3ek with tea or cookies!!!! Dip a piece of ka3ek in your tea, wait till it get moisten and just eat it!!!! I know its funny kiddy idea but it works in such case.
There are some kinds of cookies that have no diary products… however, its your cookies world and you are the master!

Hope a better nice day waiting for you tomorrow,,, stay glowing with your colorful smile.

Last time I had your problem - I was in Lebanon and the nice doctor told me the same thing, no dairy - it encourages the bugs to grow.
Plenty of fluids, anything with sugar - but not milk or juice - Cola is GREAT - also 7 Up and the rest, but not diet ones.
They give you sugar and salt and help keep up your energy levels with no nutrition for your bugs. Also clear chicken soup and plain pasta - Plain stuff, Plain Plain Plain - Rima is right. Plain Plain Plain -
love the sofa - IKEA ROCKS

Hi Halloush:

I have my oat meal with water instead of milk and a splash of sugar or honey. When I'm feeling guilty about the sugar I use raisins or better still Craisins (cranberry raisins). Delicious. Bananas would also be great with them.

I know I will be coming out from my nerd closet when I say this, but how about watching movie series, like doing Harry Potter Marathons -adds insight to the plot! :) Or better still get the lord of the rings EXTENDED EDITIONS and watch them. I cry every time i see them. But then again I do cry at cartoons sometimes. Oops did I say that out loud? :)

OH, try to download a movie called "What the Bleep do we know?" It's REALLY worth seeing.

Heyyy Hala!!

Try www.peekvid.com or www.flickpeek.com

You can see all sorts of movies and TV series on there!

As for breakfast, I'm a toast and Nutella kinda girl! You could wash it down with orange juice. If the toast is too dry... dump it and eat nutella with the spoon instead!!!

Hope you get well soon!
